According to traditional Tibetan histories, the remote mountainous land of Tibet was originally inhabited before the advent of human beings by various races of non-human spirits, called Lha or Mimayin. Tibetan shamanism, as well as Bön and Buddhism, both of which came later to Tibet, directly engaged with these local nature spirits, or Zhidak, who could be either benevolent or harmful with regard to human beings. They inhabited the wild places of nature beyond the confines of human civilization. Even today, according to Tibetan belief, they are thought to continue to exist and exert influences on local peoples. When offended by the disrespectful and destructive actions of human beings inflicted upon the natural environment, which is their home, they can project illness and other misfortunes upon humans in return. There are various classes of these spirits belonging to the sky, the underworld, and the surface of the earth according to different cultural traditions and regions, and Tibetan tradition generally has a very elaborate system for classifying them. The seminar will look into various methods for engaging, propitiating, and exorcising the negative manifestations of such spirits found in the Shamanic, Bon, and Tibetan Buddhist traditions.
