Dorje Drolöd is an especially wrathful manifestation of Guru Padmasambhava and it is one among his eight special manifestations known as the Guru Tsän-gyäd. He appeared as Dorje Drolöd at some thirteen sites, in particular at Paro Taktsang, or the Tiger’s Den in Bhutan, in order to tame and subdue certain very hostile local spirits who were causing harm to human beings. Even today this remains a famous pilgrimage site in that country. He also appeared in this guise at the oasis of Khotan on the Silk Route in Central Asia. The Terton, or discoverer for this Terma hidden treasure text, was Dudjom Lingpa, It was said during his lifetime in Golok in Eastern Tibet, that he was a manifestation of Dorje Drolöd, whose conduct embodied the “crazy wisdom” that characterized this aspect of the Guru. The fearlessness and total spontaneity of Dorje Drolöd represented such unconventional and unexpected behaviour that it confused and confounded both human enemies (dgra) and obstructing spirits (bgegs), who could create physical and spiritual obstacles on the path for practitioners of the Dharma. Furthermore, the practice of Dorje Drolöd represents both Guru Yoga, where we access the blessings or spiritual energy of Guru Padmasambhava, and Deva Yoga, where we identify ourselves in our meditation sessions with this particular Yidam meditation deity in order to access and cultivate within ourselves its qualities and capacities.
