The following publication does not present a full translation of “The Secret Book of Simhamukha,” but consists of just three extracts from that translation, namely, the Outer, Inner, and Secret Sadhanas for the Vajra Dakini, the Padma Dakini, and the Krodhi Kali Dakini forms of Simhamukha, composed by Jamgon Kongtrul at the request of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo. We plan to publish the full translation of this Secret Book in the near future. The illicit pirated version of the translation circulating without our permission on the internet represents only about a third of the full translation. The original Tibetan text was compiled by Jamyang Khyetse Wangpo in the 19th century (1820-1892), and was entitled “The Excellent Vase of Precious Jewels,” or Rin-chen bum bzang. According to Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche, this text represents the most complete compilation of Simhamukha practices of which he was aware. Nevertheless, this compilation largely belongs to the Sakyapa and Bodongpa traditions. Thus, other sadhana collections such as the Byang-gter or Northern Treasures, as well as those of Ratna Lingpa, Jigmed Lingpa, Dudjom Lingpa, and even Ayu Khandro, a disciple of Khyentse Rinpoche, may differ in terms of visualizations and mantras. One should be aware of this.
